SUMMARY:Empowerment Media mit Catherine Vhutuza
DESCRIPTION:Unter dem Titel „Empowerment Media“ veranstalten COMMIT\, Frauen*solidarität und Women on Air eine Online-Reihe zu Projektvorstellungen in den Bereichen Konstruktiver Journalismus\, Geschlechtergerechtigkeit und Diversität in Medien. \nDie Webinare mit jeweils unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten finden in englischer Sprache statt. \nErster Termin am Dienstag\, 10. September 2024 (17:00-18:30 Uhr) mit Catherine Vhutuza \nEmpowering women in Zimbabwe in the face of climate change \nCatherine Vhutuza is a 34-year-old journalist who works at the community radio station Vemuganga FM in the southern rural area of Chipinge\, Zimbabwe. Most of her programmes focus on women and girls\, giving them a voice and opportunities to create a friendly environment for their endeavors as we operate in a patriarchal society. \nIn rural areas\, most men leave their homes for greener pastures in neighbouring countries such as South Africa\, Mozambique and Botswana\, leaving women and children at home and vulnerable to various forms of abuse. It’s sometimes difficult to create a platform for women to make their own decisions. \nBy working with the media with a select number of individuals\, women are able to stand on their own\, especially on issues related to land ownership\, so it is a positive impact that community radio has brought to the voiceless. It also does radio programmes with women farmers\, linking them with the climate change specialist\, giving them knowledge on how to mitigate problems caused by changing weather patterns\, apart from the indigenous systems. As a community radio they also focus on programmes that preserve their culture through traditional dances that involve the elders with traditional knowledge to preserve Ndau culture.
