Women´s and girl´s rights in China 30 years after the last World Conference on Women in Beijing

The lecture will be followed by a discussion with participants of the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing, representatives of the co-organising organisations and participants on how we see the developments in women’s policies in Austria since the World Conference on Women?

Feng Yuan, an advocate for women’s rights and gender equality based in China, will share her experiences of initiatives for equality and against violence against women and girls in China. The event will launch a dialogue with Feng Yuan and other participants on developments in women’s policies worldwide since the Fourth and last World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. The dialogue will include the voices of feminists who participated in the 1995 conference as well as the voices of younger feminists who will shape the future of feminism.

Feng Yuan is an advocate for women’s rights and gender equality based in China, the founding director of Equality Beijing which runs a main helpline for supporting women who experiencing gender-based violence in China since 2014. After studying at Fudan University (Shanghai) and Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (Beijing), she became a journalist with the People’s Daily and China Women’s News during 1986-2006. Feng Yuan is also co-founder, founding coordinator, and a member of the board or advisory committee of organisations, which work on women and media, gender-based violence, combating HIV/AIDS, poverty alleviation, women’s leadership building and so on. She has authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited many publications, including Gender Dynamics, Feminist Activism and Social Transformation in China (co-dited with Guoguang Wu, and Helen Lansdowne, Publisher:Taylor & Francis Ltd, Imprint: ROUTLEDGE, 2019). She was a visiting scholar at University of Hong Kong (2019-2020), Harvard University (USA) (2001-2002), and Lund University (Sweden) (1998).
